Red Room & Orange Room

Below you will find separate updates for Red Room and Orange Room students. While these classes learn about similar topics, they build on what they have learned from the previous year. It's always fun to see their excitement when they remember a topic and are eager to share!

Red Room, Week of October 18th

For the past two weeks, students have been exploring instrument families and how instruments make a sound. The percussion family is currently our focus!

We used percussion instruments such as triangles, drums, and shakers to practice playing long and short sounds. Students continue to demonstrate a steady beat as we move to Irish reels and actions songs!

Red roomers have started to learn one of my favorite music games. It involves hiding an object in the room with the class giving hints to the seeker by playing soft or loud sounds on an instrument. This game is a great way to practice playing, listening, and having fun all at the same time!

Orange Room, Week of October 18th

For the past two weeks, students have taken a little pause from our instrument unit to discover what it means to compose music. I was pleased to hear so many students connected the word decompose to compose! We had a good discussion about that.

To practice composing music, students learned the song "Pumpkin Stew" using hand signs to follow along with the high, middle, and low pitches of the song. Then they composed their own version, by choosing high, middle, or low for each word of the song. For fun, students then took turns and conducted (by pointing) their song as classmates used Boomwhackers. They had a lot of fun!

I didn't think to take a video at the time, so I came up with Plan B! Make sure to check out the link in the update email to view their compositions through Song Maker.
