Yellow Room and Green Room

Below you will find separate updates for Yellow Room and Green Room students. While these classes learn about similar topics, they build on what they have learned from the previous year. It's always fun to see their excitement when they remember a topic and are eager to share!

Yellow Room, Week of October 18th

For the past two weeks, students have been learning to create simple rhythmic compositions. We started by thinking of foods we like and counted the syllables in each word. As a class, we then decided if each word fit with a quarter, eighth, or sixteenth note. It was affirmed how popular pizza is among this group!

Most recently, we took the next step in composing to add pitch. Students learned about the penta-scale (or five notes) and how they sound great in any order. We are working to combine everyone's composition into one large class creation!

We continue to use Freeze Dance Yoga to get our bodies moving, but are exploring other types of dance music to reinforce rhythms and penta-scale pitches. Eventually, we will learn some dances as a class!

Green Room, Week of October 18th

For the past two weeks, Green roomers wrapped up learning "Ode to Joy" as they turned their attention towards learning how to compose! A moment they have been patiently waiting for... learning how to use Song Maker!

For those who don't know, Song Maker is an app through Google Chrome that uses a grid of colored squares to produce music. These squares happen to align perfectly with Boomwhackers, so it is a great transition to using pitch and rhythm terms!

Students are currently learning some basic ideas they can use, but soon they will have some original music to share! Be on the lookout for a link in future email updates.
